Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral with a deep green colour and characteristic stripes.
Like many other copper-based stones, it has been ascribed healing powers for thousands of years.
The ancient Egyptians used it not only as an ornament, but also as a pigment for make-up and in rituals (malachite was associated with Horus). Its bright green colour symbolised fertility and growth.
For the Romans, on the other hand, it was more closely associated with the concepts of transformation, success and abundance, and was often used to create ritual or religious objects, or containers to be proudly displayed as an emblem of success and prestige.
In the Middle Ages, malachite continued to be prized in Europe, both for its beauty and for its supposed medicinal properties. It was believed to ward off evil and protect against negativity.
Whether given as a gift as a wish for success and protection, or worn as a celebration or memento, malachite is a fascinating but fragile stone that I recommend wearing on the most special of occasions.
